Losing your hair can be extremely distressing, but hearing from like-minded people who have been through a similar situation can build up your confidence and make you feel like you’re on your own. We reached out to our customers and gave them the opportunity to open up about their journey with wigs and how wearing them has shaped the person they are today.
We recently spoke to Claire, one of our lovely customers, who was brave enough to share her story, and hopes it will help others rediscover their confidence.
Claire’s story of how a wig helped her feel more confident with Alopecia
Claire’s hair loss journey first began when she was just 21. She opens about her fight with Alopecia, and how she managed to accept her condition.
“At 21, you should be in your prime, but for me, these years were spent being ashamed and embarrassed, trying to hide my Alopecia in every way possible. It took me a long time to accept it. As reality kicked in, I slowly began to embrace my Alopecia and Joseph’s Wigs Tabu Wig by Ellen Wille in Lavender was the first wig I bought that was truly out of my comfort zone. I was used to long, straight, mousy brown hair, but going for a wavy, shoulder length Lavender was so empowering!”
When did you start wearing your wig?
“I started wearing wigs 8 years ago. At first, I would spend all my money on hair loss treatments and chose wigs that were as similar to my natural hair as possible.”
Did you have any hesitations about wearing wigs for the first time?
“I knew nothing about wigs when I was first diagnosed with Alopecia. I was scared and embarrassed about my new condition, so wanted to get a wig which was as close to my natural hair as possible so that no one would notice. Learning about styles, colours, cap construction and the differences between fibre and synthetic was very daunting, but over the years I have learnt so much.”

How many wigs do you have in your collection?
“I have 3 at the moment, but I am always on the lookout for new styles and colours and look forward to my next wig shop!”
How often do you replace your wigs?
“As I wear wigs daily, I tend to replace them every 6-8 months to keep them fresh.”
Which is your go-to, human hair or synthetic hair wigs?
“I prefer synthetic wigs as they often come pre styled and tend to be lower maintenance.”

What advice would you give to someone who is new to the world of wigs?
“Wigs are super fun! It has only been in the past couple of years that I have started to embrace my Alopecia, so I completely understand the fear that accompanies the condition. I found that the sooner I accepted it, the more free I felt. I was scared what people would think, but the more I have opened up about it, I have had nothing but love and support, which I wish I had when I first started my Alopecia journey if I hadn’t hidden it!”
